    Abstract

    This study investigates the impact of carbon particle size derived from Galangal Rhizomes on adsorption isotherm characteristics, aiming to establish its effectiveness as an adsorbent. Ga-langal Rhizomes were selected due to their rich carbon compounds, including cellulose, hem-icellulose, lignin, starch, pectin, and fiber, making them ideal for carbon-based adsorbents. The carbonization process involved subjecting Galangal Rhizomes to 250°C for 9 hours, then mill-ing and sieving to obtain specific particle sizes (500, 1000, and 2000 µm). Characterization was done using digital microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Batch adsorp-tion experiments were conducted using a curcumin solution as the model adsorbate, comparing results with ten standard isotherm models. Findings revealed that small carbon particles (500 µm) underwent monolayer adsorption, while large particles (1000 and 2000 µm) exhibited multilayer adsorption. The study concluded that Galangal Rhizomes-derived carbon particles are effective for colour waste cleanup, providing a natural, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution aligned with sustainable development goals (SDGs). © 2024 Asep Bayu Dani Nandiyanto.

  • Geospatial Intelligence Framework for BTS Infrastructure Planning Toward Universal Internet Access Target in Indonesia

    Abstract

    Equitable internet coverage has emerged as a key global priority, which is essential for promoting inclusive and sustainable development. The Indonesian government aims to provide universal internet access by 2024, particularly in remote regions. This study introduces a novel machine-learning-based approach to identify the priority areas for deploying Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers, which are crucial for achieving the internet access targets of the government. A BTS Network Priority Index was developed by integrating the internet demand estimates with a BTS suitability index derived from key predictors: proximity to fiber optic stations, physical–environmental suitability, and infrastructure–economic readiness. The model identified areas with high internet demand and high BTS suitability as the most critical for immediate development, covering 20 km2. Additionally, future BTS development should target areas with high demand but medium suitability (900 km2) and medium demand but high suitability (280 km2). To validate the methodology, the Random Forest model was employed, which achieved an area under the curve value of 0.7315, indicating strong predictive performance. For the BTS Deployment Suitability parameter, the median was 0.65, with the lower and upper quartiles at 0.44 and 0.85, respectively, confirming that most proposed locations are highly suitable for development. This systematic approach provides data-driven insights for the equitable distribution of BTS towers to ensure efficient internet infrastructure expansion across Indonesia. Furthermore, the study offers a framework that can be adapted by other countries aiming to improve their digital infrastructure and achieve comprehensive, equitable internet access. © 2024 The Author(s)

    Abstract

    Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a crucial role as an instrumental approach that must be widely promoted to ensure a more advanced and sustainable future. This study aims to comprehensively analyse the successful implementation of ESD in Vocational High Schools (VHS) with a specialisation in the Telecommunication System Subject. To achieve this objective, a research methodology combining document analysis, and interviews was employed. Through document analysis and semi-structured interviews with three subject matter experts among school personnel, pertinent data was gathered. The data encompassed the examination of the syllabus and lesson plans, which were subsequently subjected to meticulous scrutiny using the powerful Maxqda Software. The research findings demonstrate that the existing grading systems and qualification criteria for VHS students align significantly with the core competencies of ESD. However, it is noteworthy that the syllabus and Lesson Plans Study (RPP) themselves lack explicit integration of ESD principles. The effective implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) heavily relies on the proactive efforts of teachers. Additionally, it is crucial that both the curriculum and lesson plans (RPP) are meticulously revised to integrate key ESD competencies. This approach will help cultivate a generation that is more sustainable, environmentally aware, and socially responsible. © 2024, Penerbit UTHM. All rights reserved.

    Abstract

    Purpose: This research explores the potential incorporation of Indonesian folklore, particularly the folklore of the origin of Bandung, into Arabic language teaching materials. Integrating local cultural elements into language instruction can enhance students’ language learning experience and promote a deeper understanding of Indonesian culture. Design/methodology/approach: The origin city of Bandung is one of the famous folklore stories in Indonesia that originates from West Java. Through ethnographic studies, various aspects of the folklore of the origin of the city of Bandung will be examined, which can be utilized in Arabic language teaching. This includes analyzing the linguistic structure, vocabulary and cultural references embedded in the story. Additionally, we will explore how teachers can effectively incorporate this folklore into their teaching materials to create engaging and culturally relevant Arabic language lessons. Findings: This research aims to contribute to developing innovative and culturally responsive language learning by investigating the use of Indonesian folklore in Arabic language instruction. It aims to empower teachers and students by fostering a deeper appreciation of Indonesian culture while improving Arabic language proficiency. This approach enhances language learning outcomes, promotes cultural awareness and cultivates a deeper connection between students and the local culture. By embracing folklore, teachers can create dynamic and meaningful language learning experiences that empower students to become proficient Arabic speakers with a strong appreciation for Indonesian wisdom and culture. Research limitations/implications: Overall, using folklore as a foreign language teaching material provides significant advantages for students in developing a deeper understanding of language, cultural skills and interest in the language and culture being studied. This approach improves language learning outcomes, promotes cultural awareness and fosters deeper relationships between students and local culture so that foreign language (Arabic) learning is effective. By embracing folklore, teachers can create dynamic and meaningful language learning experiences that empower students to become proficient Arabic speakers with a strong appreciation for local Indonesian wisdom and culture. Practical implications: Practically, this involves understanding the social, political, economic or cultural context in which the folklore arose, as well as new interpretations that provide a broader understanding of the stories’ values, messages or conflicts. In contributing to knowledge, this research has implications for insight into linguistic knowledge and learning a second language in the norms of the first language without shifting the culture of the first language. Social implications: Empirically, this study combines an interdisciplinary approach to folklore research that can bring a new understanding of the relationship between folklore and other fields such as linguistics, literature, anthropology or psychology. This approach can produce a more comprehensive insight into folklore and its influence on various aspects of life. Contributing to social impact, introducing culture in learning materials is an educational tourism attraction for students. This also has an impact on public policy that tourism education about folklore is introduced as teaching and used as further field study for students. Originality/value: This research conceptualizes the diversity of Indonesian culture integrated into the instructional materials of Arabic language learning in Indonesia through folklore. To integrate folktales into the learning process, families, traditions and rituals need to play a role in preserving and educating. Researchers can develop new insights, broaden our understanding of culture and traditions and enrich our knowledge and cultural heritage. These new approaches have the potential to yield discoveries and a deeper understanding of folklore as an important cultural heritage. This research explores the potential incorporation of Indonesian folklore, particularly the folklore of the origin of Bandung, into Arabic language teaching materials.     Abstract

    This study aimed to develop and implement an IoT-based health monitoring system for sheep to accurately monitor vital physiological parameters, such as body temperature, pulse rate, and respiration rate. The system combined various IoT technologies, integrating the ESP32 microcontroller, ThingSpeak platform, and non-invasive sensors. Research and development methods, including system design, implementation, and testing, were utilized. Results showcased that the system effectively provided accurate and real-time monitoring of the targeted physiological parameters. Results demonstrate impressive sensor accuracy with over 90% precision in most instances. Body temperature measurements showed an average error of only 2.6%, while pulse rate measurements displayed an impressively low average error of just 1.2%. Respiration rate measurements exhibited a slightly higher average error at 7.55%. The implementation of this system allowed for early detection of potential health issues, leading to improved decision-making, livestock management, and animal welfare. The study’s impact lies in the advancement of non-invasive health monitoring systems for livestock and prospects for AI-assisted predictive analysis, automated decision-making, and extension to other livestock species for overall improvement in animal welfare and farm productivity. © 2023 IEEE.

  • Screening Hypertension Using Non-Laboratory Risk Factors with Machine Learning: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study in Indonesia

    Abstract:

    Objective: This study aimed to screen for hypertension in a vast Indonesian population using machine learning (ML) and 11 non-laboratory risk factors, validating the results through internal and external validations.

    Setting and participants: From the initial 1 782 365 participants aged 15 and above registered at the Integrated Counseling Post primary care centres across Indonesia from 2014 to 2017, incomplete data and outliers were excluded, and 268 210 participants were included in our analysis. The dataset was split deterministically into a dataset for training using 10-fold internal cross-validation of 204 315 participants and another dataset for external validation of 63 895 participants.

    Design: This retrospective cross-sectional study used three ML algorithms, that is, random forest, gradient boosting and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and compared them against logistic regression as a benchmark to screen hypertension based on the WHO and International Society of Hypertension criteria. The importance of the risk factors was ranked. By partly using continuous versus categorical age, waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) risk factors, we evaluated the screening performance regarding sensitivity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC).

    Results: The external validations revealed that the XGBoost model performed the best in hypertension screening. The external validation, which partly uses continuous variables, provides 0.97 sensitivity and 0.75 AUC, indicating excellent screening capability. The importance rank of the risk factors was consecutively family history of hypertension (FH-HTN), age, WC, BMI, occupation, education, sex, smoking, low physical activity, lack of fruit or vegetable intake and alcohol consumption.

    Conclusions: By using 11 easy-to-collect non-laboratory risk factors, the ML model successfully screens for hypertension with better performance than the benchmark. Using the numerical variables of age, WC and BMI yields a better discrimination capability than the categorical variables. FH-HTN and age are the two top risk factors for the development of hypertension. This study is a useful academic exercise and shows ML’s importance in handling large data sets.

    Abstract

    The economic decline becomes the most severe phenomenon that hit the world besides the medical impact of the coronavirus outbreak. Southeast Asia countries as the middle-income countries require a better strategy to successfully respond to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Moreover, the highly uncertain condition makes it difficult for the affected companies’ management in decision and policy-making. Therefore, this chapter aimed to develop better risk and a crisis management as the right response towards rapid and sudden change in crisis situation. In particular, it suggests ways that decision makers can adjust their company management for dealing with the extreme condition. The chapter explored risk and crisis management of some management experts using descriptive analysis, literature review, and qualitative technique. The chapter resulted in risk and crisis management strategies for reducing losses but at the same time providing protection for their employee considering people’s safety is second to none. The way of how companies react will bring big impacts to control the economic downturn in the middle of a global recession that now seems inevitable. © 2024 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

  • New Approach of COVID-19 Prevention by Implemented Combination of Decision Support System Algorithm

    Abstract:

    Indonesia and Malaysia from 2020 to 2021 were exposed to COVID-19 pandemic. Both countries implemented a policy of restricting entry areas based on almost the same criteria, In Indonesia namely as PPKM which applying some level of exposure to those infected with covid-19. The determination of this level was all based on the growth in numbers exposed to covid-19, but on pandemic cases, the number of people who do not suffer from COVID-19 disease but have the same symptoms as the symptoms of COVID-19 also need to be considered as the pandemic agent to their environment. We named it as Precaution Covid-19 Pandemic (PCP) Level. The current level of the COVID-19 pandemic has not been fully determined by this idea. So, the idea of this research is to determine the pre-pandemic or precaution level of covid-19 in an area interfere by surrounding area. PCP level was not based on the growth of those infected with the covid-19 disease, but influenced by the number of patients whose have the symptoms similar to the dominant symptoms of the covid-19. The PCP Level determination can be used for precaution policy and support the previous Level Pandemic Methods. To accomplish this idea, three algorithms are used, they are K-Mean algorithm as a pattern clustering and the AHP algorithm as a level determination of the Covid-19 pandemic, While the relationship of candidate symptom pairs to Covid-19 transmission is carried out using the Naïve Bayes algorithm. The results of this study show that the combination of the three proposed algorithms provides and using data symptoms closely to dominant covid-19 symptoms can give an alternative for precaution level of covid-19 pandemic. The model for determining Covid-19 transmission based on four candidate symptoms has 89% precision and 85% accuracy.     Abstract

    Adaptation of new technology in e-learning begins with psychological motivation from students, where this becomes important related to the success of the e-learning concept. Examining the phenomenon, this study aims to investigate the relationship between student psychological motivation and expected benefits, e-learning curriculum, and educational partners. The research was conducted on students in the city of Bandung through a quantitative survey. The data from students was taken through a questionnaire and the tabulated data from the questionnaire was processed using SmartPLS. There is a research model based on the design of the research hypothesis being tested. The results showed that the expected benefit and e-learning curriculum had a positive relationship with psychological motivation. Meanwhile, educational partners do not have a positive relationship with psychological motivation. Furthermore, it is known that the expected benefit has the biggest impact in supporting the psychological motivation of students. Psychological motivation is important related to the adaptation of new technology in e-learning, because it is a factor that can increase the success of using e-learning as a learning medium. The findings of this study can be used as input for universities in reviewing the concept of e-learning so that it can be well received by its users.
